NASA releases new images of Neptune and its rings

It is pertinent to remember that the first spacecraft to see Neptune was the probe of the POT Voyager 2. The event occurred in 1989, being the only ship to visit that planet.

For her part, planetary astronomer Heidi Hammel explained that astronomers during these 33 years had not seen the rings with such detail and clarity.

“I am not going to lie. I cried when I saw THE FIRST IMAGES OF JWST NEPTUNE! “OMG – LOOK AT THE RINGS” I was yelling, making my kids, my mom, even my cats look. Over 20 years in development and JWST delivered,” Heidi, who works with the telescope, wrote in a tweet.

In turn, Hammel noted that the “wide-field image shows Neptune in context with the galaxy-filled night sky.” She clarified that what can be seen near the planet is not a star.

“That’s not a star! That’s Neptune’s fantastic moon, Triton! It appears brighter than Neptune because at these near-IR wavelengths, Neptune’s atmospheric methane absorbs sunlight, obscuring the planet; this is also why the rings stick out, ”he described in the publication.
