Overwatch 2 will run up to 600fps and you can thank Nvidia. Working with Blizzard for Nvidia Reflex support on Overwatch 2Nvidia says the game developer increased the maximum supported fps in the game after it gave Nvidia’s next-gen RTX 40-series graphics cards a shot.
Nvidia’s next-gen RTX 40 series will launch with the flagship RTX 4090 (opens in new tab) on October 12, and Overwatch 2 will launch just before that on October 4.
They should play pretty well together that day. Nvidia has confirmed that frame rates of over 360fps will be achievable on an RTX 4090, which should be enough for all but the most extreme gaming monitors available today. It has also confirmed that Nvidia Reflex latency reduction technology (opens in new tab)comes to the popular hero shooter.
Nvidia Reflex is a technology that helps reduce system latency through a series of GPU and game optimizations in supported games. Overwatch was one of the first to support the technology when it first launched in 2020, so it makes sense that we’d see it make its way into the impending sequel.
But reportedly, in the run-up to Overwatch 2’s release, Nvidia has been sharing its RTX 40-series secrets with Blizzard to ensure maximum performance, and the game developer increased the maximum possible fps in the game as a result. at a whopping 600fps.
“Turns out the 40-series GPUs are so fast that the team at Blizzard has increased Overwatch 2’s frame cap to 600 frames per second,” Justin Walker, senior director of product management at Nvidia, told us today.
Although Walker never said what the previous frame limit was, let’s assume it wasn’t 599fps.
Nvidia showed a demo with the game running at around 460fps and 6ms latency at 1440p with an RTX 4090 installed. The CPU will be a bit more limited as you head to 1080p, so your choice of chip can play a big part in deciding if you can really push fps above that figure or if you can hit the limit of 600fps
From beta experience, it looks like Overwatch 2 will have a ton of graphical settings to tweak, including AMD’s Super Resolution FidelityFX. Maybe that’s also useful for getting closer to that 600fps cap, but I don’t suspect it’s going to be a terribly demanding game at its lowest settings, either.
